And Then it was warm again!

No photos today, but guess what?  I had to change out of my jeans back into shorts because it was just too warm.  We had a “leisurely” day.  We spent the morning sitting out side in the sun and then in the afternoon went for a drive through down town St.Augustine and out to the beach.  Love this Florida Sunshine….

Our RV park has a Flea Market on the weekend on the field next door so we thought we would stick around over the weekend to see what that was about.  We are going to take a tour trolley around down town St. Augustine Friday if it doesn’t rain.

Historic Savannah Tour. and Christmas decorations hit the Butterfly.

Monday, after several hours of work at the contracting job, we headed to down town Savannah.  We had visited with some folks staying in the campground and they suggested we go to the visitor center and walk the down town.  We went to the visitor center and chose to ride a tour trolley instead.

Savannah has 21 “Squares” and a jillion historic buildings in the Historic District.  This Catholic Catherdral is just one of dozens of 1800’s churches.  It is certainly worth spending several days walking and sightseeing.  We really enjoyed the tour but only got a couple of photos.  Two things contributed to this.  One was that it was chilly and they pulled down the semi clear plastic curtains to keep the driver warm I guess.  You couldn’t take photos through these things.  The second factor was that the camera battery died after about 6 shots so I guess the curtains didn’t matter that much.

Sunday night it was raining when we arrived and so we dug out the Christmas decoration and Kitten did up our home in it’s Christmas dressup.  Tis the Season.

McAllister State Historic Park Campground - Richmond Hill Ga

Just South of Savannah on I-95 is the town of Richmond Hill.  At this exit we drove down Georgia State Highway 144 about 10 miles to the McAllister State Historic Park.  This is a historic site where the Confederates built a fort to repel the Union troops.  It also has a nice campground.

In the morning the sun reflects off the Ogeechee River and sends sun beams through the forest.  It is a peaceful place.  Over the weekend the 47 site campground was booked and full but by the time we pulled in Sunday night there were only campground hosts left.

We know, again that we are in the south by the plantlife.  There are a variety of palms, oaks and pines in the forest.

There are hickory in here too and some are just turning on their fall color show.  We found out that the reason one variety of Oak is called “Live Oak” is that it never goes dormant.  It continues to leaf and grow year round.

A Final Look around Charleston and then back on the road.

On Saturday we drove around Charleston and gazed at the historic old houses and the historic downtown areas of Charleston.  There were more beautiful houses than I had imagined.  We walked along the break water near Battery Park and then went looking for some groceries.

Sunday morning we were up early.  Unusual in itself but at this point the up early part was a sure sign it was time to move on.  We got a lot of rain and this is a very old RV Park which has had a lot of rigs driving on the grass sites.  Just like an old mattress which develops sags, this place also has it’s sags or “low places.”  Our site wasn’t bad although I had to drive out to hitch the car up on a dry spot.  These poor folks had to wade in to hitch their trailer.

When we got out as far as I-95 on the way from Charleston to Savannah we discovered the truth in the statement “the sunday after Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year.”  There was almost wall to wall traffic all the way.  This is the first time I have ever had stop and go out in the middle of nowhere on an interstate.

We arrived at the Fort McAllister State Historic Park and went for a drive in the rain.  Hope it stops tomorrow.
